saying good-bye to chloe diggers

Earlier this year, Dan and I bid the most bittersweet good-bye to our Chlo E. Diggers.

In 2012, I remember ringing in the new year at home on the couch, so content with a hound in my lap and a husband by my side.  If we're here next year, just the three of us, I'll be happy. I got to revisit that moment 12 months later, but I knew better than to make the same wish this year at midnight.  At 10.5, Chloe had quickly started to show the signs of age.

Weeks later, a knot behind her left ear that the vet had been watching, hoping medicine would treat, seemed to double in size overnight. It was cancer, and the vet told us she couldn't survive surgery. One Saturday morning in March, after a long night of hacking, resting only if I kept a hand on her chest, Chloe couldn't hold down her breakfast. We took her back to the doctor, but we didn't bring her home.

Dan became Chloe's dad when she was just weeks old. She saw him through some lonely bachelor years, pooping on the floor in front of girl after girl he had hoped to date until I came along when she was 5. Dan joked to me that Chloe would be the deciding factor in the future of our courtship, that she could count on one paw the people she liked. If I met her approval I could stay around. Quickly I learned her affection could be bought with doggy ice cream. Less than a year later, she would run in circles and howl when Dan would ask her, "Where's your mom?"

She liked me a lot. She loved puppy pops.

The night Dan got down on one knee to propose to me Chloe was behind him, her short front legs (leg-arms, as we called them) reaching up his back for his shoulders.  Together, they asked if I would stay around forever. It is my most favorite memory of the hundreds I've revisited since we stroked and sang our dog into her last nap.

In the final weeks, when I could no longer pretend Chloe wasn't slipping, my prayer was always Let her know no pain. She was very uncomfortable on that last day, it was clear, but for the most part I believe she hurt very little.  She had stopped asking for belly rubs. She had stopped snuggling with us on the couch.  She had shared all the love and bad breath she had to give, and our hearts are softer and fuller for it.

As much as true dog people can, we adored our dainty, lazy, soft, smelly, loyal, stubborn, warm, spoiled, speckled, and perfect real girl.  We miss her every day.

caught RED-handed

**enter here to win a signed copy of Secrets of the Mommyhood**

This is me trying to decrypt the liner notes from the new Taylor Swift album, RED.

MAPLE LATTES. FOR ETHEL. YOU'LL NEVER KNOW.

I can't help it, I'm a TSwift apologist. I feel like I can very much own this because I didn't read any of those vampire books. I claim vampire immunity a lot when justifying very common practices (see above, I'd just finished rereading War and Peace). I can champion songs that are straight up US Weekly to music because I was never on any of the vampire teams. So I did this weekend, combing through the lyrics to unriddle Taylor's vague but oh-so telling messages. I can't tell you how much it intrigued me. And made me feel 13. I feel like in 2013 I'll be making heart hands at her concert. Dan says he'll take me. He's my Joe, Jake, John, Connor, Taylor (aka Jacob) Edward.

For her part, Chloe says she'd rather hear a dog whistle, which totally shocked me. I figured she'd be all ears for songs about puppy love.

a perfect ten

*don't forget to enter HERE to win a $50 Tiny Prints gift card **

There's nothing like another birthday to make even the most dignified lady become and emotional eater....

Yet, no one can hide from Mother Time...not even Chlo Ella Diggers.

Chloe turns 10 today. She's a full-fledged senior citizen. We'll be celebrating with puppy pops + squirrel cookies from Dairy Godmother. And steak...cause she's a real girl

Pillow Talk

Over the last few months Chloe has come to understand the luxury of a good pillow, and every night after dinner, she procures her favorite silk throw and stretches out over two-thirds of the couch. Dan and I are left to snuggle up in what space remains, and it's not that we mind the closeness, it's just a matter of principle really, as after a hard day's work, we're left to find comfort around what works best for the dog.

Last night I was propped up on what has become Chloe's pillow. (See below the photos we've snapped in recent weeks of her pillow ownership progression. Redic.)  Chloe jumped on the couch, gave me the stink eye and wouldn't stop looking at me.

"You have her pillow," Dan pointed out to me.

"Give her another one," I said.

"She wants hers," Dan argued, "You're breaking her heart."

I don't have to tell you what happened next. You know, of course, that Chloe's hounding prevailed.

Pillow Fight!!

Every reader of home decor books and magazines knows that the easiest way to spruce up a room is to change out pillows. In my Q1 put-lipstick-on-a-pig efforts to make our house more of a home, getting new sofa pillows has been budgeted for February.  In addition to the main pillows, for the smaller sofa that we call Chloe's Couch (because it's her favorite place to rest) I want one basset hound pillow.

Chloe needs one.

Someone thinks such a decorative touch is...non-essential.

Someone will likely lose this pillow fight.

Housekeeping is...

 so exhausting.

That is probably why my mom rarely tidies anything!

Tail Mail

Now that Thanksgiving has passed, it's game on for stalking the mail box! Christmas is snail mail season as everyone sends out holiday cards. Our Diggers dog has graced many a greeting, as have bassets much like her...

...but she's not on the receiving end of much from the post office. Every now and then, though.....

she gets a little tail mail! Her BBFs (Best Barkers Forever) from St. Louis sent the sweetest note to say Happy Turkey!

As you might imagine, Staz + Kiwi's mom...she's a dog person, too.

Does your pet send tail mail? Does your pet recieve it? Or are my friends and I just off our rockers - hee?!

Animal Instinct

Clean laundry. It's a luxury so rare at our house that Chloe puts her full weight behind guarding it the way other animals protect only their young.......

That is why, I choose to believe, clean clothes often linger for days on the couch after being folded. It's truly a case of Put Away At Your Own Risk. I mean...would you dare?

We Are Dog People

Sometimes, the truth is hard to face, but it just stares back at you, right from your...phone.

Virginia +  Kiwi

We are some of Those People. Those of us who are dog people, especially dog people without children....
Kelly + Phillie

well, we can give the wildest Facebook Mom a run for her money when babbling shamelessly about our children pets. One look at this face, and I think it's easy to see why...

A couched Chloe Diggers
Hee.

Last weekend my friend Virginia was in town. A quick brag, she ran (and completed!) the Marine Corps Marathon....
Heavy Medal

Before her big race, though, she had to carb load so, helping where I best could, I joined her and some of her other friends at DC's Casa Nonna. Food there, by the way, is very good.

Once the pasta had been cleared, the conversation amongst those of us who mother four-legged fur balls but have yet to spawn anything in legs of two, quickly turned to our pooches. Then out came the phones...

and the parade of puppy photos.

Virginia with her first born, Staz

This is probably the part where I should get all self-deprecating and make fun of us for loving our pets the way people love their kids, or in the same way, in their stead. I'm not going to do that, though. I think it's perfectly fine for people to lean equally or even more Toto than tot.

We are a Dog People, and there's no need to apologize.

Halloween is Ruff...

...when you take to costuming as your dog.

Do you know what the funniest thing about this picture is? Not that for Halloween I dressed as Chloe. But, in this photo, I'm wearing one of Dan's undershirts. And, as you might see, it's on backwards. Here's why: there was a stack of clean laundry in a basket downstairs, and we were just about to eat dinner. Chili. I didn't want to spill on my the beige sweater I was wearing, so I grabbed one of Dan's {white - oops} t-shirts. I did spill on it. Shocker. BUT...because, by chance, I was sporting the shirt backwards, even if there's a slight stain, he may never know. See, it's been so long since I've posted I've taken to writing about shirt stains. Sigh.

Hi again, blog friends. It's been a while. I'm back, and I'll be barking at you later this week. I hope you had a fun, stain-free HowloHalloween!

Meal Planning, Meal Freezing

As much as I love Fall, I hate falling back an hour and that looming day when Daylight Savings ends has been a major motivator for me to simplify (like Real Simple!!!!) my weeknights at home after work.

Eating dinner around 7:30 or 8pm when the sun is still out is one thing, but when it's already dark when I get home after a long drive, I find myself wanting to do nothing but eat ice cream from a carton and fall into bed. Not good for the weight loss efforts at all....

To prevent existing on nothing but frozen dairy or take-out alone, I've been getting serious again about weeknight meal planning ...

...and getting some dinners in the freezer. This weekend I made a big batch of spaghetti sauce, enough for two meals....

and a chicken pot pie, Dan's favorite.

Marinating in the fridge right now is a pork loin, floating in Coke Zero and brown sugar, ala Skinny Taste, that I will slow cook later in the week. There should be plenty of left overs from that to freeze some for another meal, too!

My friend Kathleen, a teacher, froze a month's worth of meals before returning back to school this Fall. A month! Maybe you Real Simple-types sneeze at this, but it blew my mind. I think it's awesome. SOOOO awesome, that I asked Kathleen to do a guest blog telling me and y'all ALL about it - what she cooked, how long it took, what are her favorite meals once thawed, what kind of freezer dishes did she use, etc - and she's going to do it soon. So, if you have your own questions that kind of freezing effort, leave in the comments and I'll pass them along to Kathleen!

Happy Planning and Happy Freezing!

A FAN-tastic Weekend

The air conditioning is still out at my house...and it won't be working again til Wednesday at the earliest!   So, I have nothing exciting to share from the weekend - just lots of sweating, complaining, sweating, being grateful it was only in the 90's, sweating...and eating popsicles.

The photo above is a magnet, one that we actually have on our fridge, but it sums up how we spent the weekend. Chloe, especially, has become the BIGGEST fan hog EVER - it's soooo funny.

How'd you chill out this weekend?

Gettting What You Ask For...

Remember a few weeks ago when I talked about how the heat wasn't bothering me at all? Remember just yesterday when I said I wanted ALL the frills of summer to linger for a while?

In a classic, and mildly cruel, case of You Get What You Ask For, the air-conditioning went out in our house yesterday.  Dan's meeting this morning with a repairman, but last night......it, um, sure felt like summer inside our house.

Ever the alarmist,  I was overly concerned about our little Diggers Dog. Chloe was clearly hot, breathing heavier and panting harder than she normally is when sipping cold, filtered water from a glass and eating a Puppy Pop in the A/C, so....I set her up in front of the fan and pulled a cold compress from the freezer for her to snuggle for a while.

I think it helped.

Meanwhile, since fate seems to be delivering everything I request, I might go buy a lotto ticket today. Something tells me paying for this at-home heatwave won't be cheap....

A Real Girl

Chloe does a lot of things I'm a tad embarassed to admit - like eat puppy pop ice cream, drink water from a glass (yes, seriously...) and sometimes sleep in our bed.

When Chloe engages in these human-like behaviors (behaviors Dan + I have totally indulged, behaviors non-dog people surely find super ridiculous) we are, of course, wildly amused by her.

"Do you think you're a real girl, Diggers?" we ask her, in the most sing-songy, saccharine-laced voice you've ever heard.

Typically, Chloe is a foot-of-the-bed kind of sleeper. But lately, she's been in full-on spoon mode with her dad.

I'll put her in bed when I get up in the morning and she nudges into the crook of Dan's arm and just lays there...like a real girl.

She barely moves, except to offer a subtle demand for a belly rub....

Dog days of summer? Every day is a dog day in our house!

Over the Royal Wedding Yet?

I'm not! But, Princess Chlo E. Diggers of the Suburbs* is.....

She is, afterall, of French Bitch lineage.

Tomorrow I'll be sharing behind-the-scenes with Good Morning America. It was so, so fun!

*I was a tad nervous on Thursday night, awaiting the arrival of GMA, wondering if our party would please them, worried I'd look like a big cow on TV. In a move that was {as the Brits might say!}  brilliant, Chloe's dad crafted her a Reynolds Wrap Halo design tiara, and sent me the picture of her by text to divert my anxieties. What a Prince!
