Before there was a Martha Stewart, there was Martha Washignton.....and she entertained any and every one who showed up at her door during the holiday season - sometimes as many as 700 people! Visitors aren't allowed to take photos inside the house, but here's a peak from a feature LIFE magazine recently published....

I loved all the people dressed in period clothing...the characters were really fabulous!
As were the carolers.....
We left our knickers and wigs at home....
There's a restaurant on the grounds at Mt. Vernon, but it was closed for a private dinner. So, in keeping with the historical feel of our holiDate, we dined at Gadsby's Tavern, a restuarant that's been around since the late 1700's...serving the likes of Washington, Jefferson, Adams and Monroe. If you go there, be sure to get the ham biscuit appetizer....it is yummy!!
I hope you have a fun and festive holiDate this weekend!
