A few weekends ago I was down in Virginia Beach visiting Big Dave for Fathers' Day and needed some beach/pool reads. I bought two books: one that was chicklit-ish with some frilly cover that I read first, and already cannot even recall, and because Pat Conroy had written a line of support and it was set in the South, I also bought The King of Lies.
I won't soon forget this book!
John Hart is a wordy writer, and I like that. He forces me to read slow. Usually I skim through details, but Hart's words matter to me so I hung on every last one. His style is Conroy meets John Grisham with a Jodi Picoult finale flair.
There's a murder mystery, so of course there is a legal sidebar. There are also dark secrets to be uncovered. It's a change in the final pages kind of book - perfect for a summer read!
After reading this review from Total Momsense I'm waiting on a book called What Alice Forgot from the Libary...
...and I may be the first request in line over at the LOC for the new Jennifer Weiner.
After that, I'm bumping a few Nora Ephron titles to the top of my reading list.
What's the best book you've read this summer?

I like murder mysteries so I may have to try the first one.
The way you described the first one makes me want to read it. I also love books that make me wait until the end, on the edge of my seat, to find out what happened :) Happy Friday. oxo
I'm heading to Ocean City, MD next week for vacation and I was looking for a new read for the beach! I'm going with all of the above! :)
Thanks for sharing!
First of all, I love that you selected the book because Pat Conroy had written a one-liner about it. Conroy is one of my favorite authors and probably would have chosen the book for the same reason. After your description, I must get my hands on this book and more from John Hart. Alas, it will have to wait until after the Bar. If you have not read Conroy's "The Water is Wide," I suggest you do. It is one of his quicker reads and based on his own experience teaching on Daufuskie Island in Beaufort County.
I read a Christian romance called "The Cubicle Next Door" by accident. :D Someone recommended it to me and the reviews on Amazon were pretty good. It was not very realistic and pretty fluffy, but well-written and the perfect thing to cleanse my palate after 50 Shades. :D I did not even know that there was such a thing as a Christian Romance genre! Next on my list for when we travel to Texas: Game Change, and then JK Rowling's new book!
Great recommendations. I've just been reading baby books-ha!
I love your book post and that you check books out at the LOC!!! A few years back I visited a friend (your pal Aaron) and the LOC was on my must see places to see:-)
I have "What Alice Forgot" in my TBR pile - you'll have to let me know how it is! Liane Moriarty also has a book called "The Hypnotist's Love Story" that sounds really good.
John Hart is a family friend of a good friend on ours...so I have met him and his beautiful family. Glad you enjoyed the book!
